Perbedaan antara Besi dengan Baja

Besi dan baja merupakan jenis logam yang serupa namun bisa dikatakan berbeda atau tak sama. Besi dan baja masuk ke dalam logam jenis ferrous atau logam dengan bahan dasar Fe. Banyak orang awam yang menyamakan derajat dua material tersebut. Lalu apa sih perbedaan mendasar dari logam besi dan baja.

1.        Dengan Cara Memukulnya

Cara ini bukan candaan tapi merupakan cara yang paling mudah untuk membedakan material tersebut merupakan besi atau baja. Material baja jika dipukul akan menghasilkan bunyi yang nyaring, coba saja pukul material baja yang ada di sekitar rumah, seperti pagar rumah, dan sepeda. Nyaring kan bunyinya! Berbeda dengan material baja, besi jika dipukul tidak menghasilkan bunyi yang nyaring dan seperti teredam oleh sesuatu hal. Coba pukul blok mesin pada motor, maka suara tidak akan muncul. Hal tersebut terjadi karena pada besi terdapat grafit yang dapat meredam getaran. Oleh karena itu material besi banyak digunakan pada blok mesin yang diperuntukkan agar blok mesin tidak menerima getaran terlalu berlebihan.

2.        Kandungan Karbon

Jika dilihat secara mikro, material besi dan baja tidak hanya tersusun oleh Fe saja, namun terdapat karbon didalamnya. Jika ditinjau dari ilmu material, perbedaan antara baja dengan besi dapat dilihat pada diagram Fe-Fe₃C berikut ini. Di mana material dikatakan baja jika memiliki kandungan karbon kurang dari 2%, sedangkan untuk kadar karbon lebih dari 2% material tersebut dikatakan besi.

Pada baja, karbon akan larut di dalam Fe membentuk fasa ferit (α)/Fe₃C dengan bentuk lamellar atau sering disebut fasa perlit. Sedangkan pada besi, karbon akan membentuk grafit yang bebas.

3.        Sifat Mekanis

Pernahkan Anda melihat padepokan pencak silat yang sedang latihan mematahkan besi pemegang pompa air mianual atau biasa disebnut “pipa pompa dragon”. Pasti Anda terkesima melihatnya, dan bedecak kagum. Memang hal tersebut memang luar biasa namun apabila pesilat tersebut diberikan tantangan untuk mematahkan pipa baja pasti akan patah juga, TANGANNYA YANG PATAH. 

Dari ilustrasi tersebut dapat dikatakan bahwa besi memiliki sifat yang rapuh/getas. Berbeda jika dibandingkan dengan baja yang memiliki keuletan dan tinggi sehingga baja termasuk material yang tangguh dan tidak mudah patah.

4.        Perbedaan lainnya

Temperatur yang diperlukan untuk melebur baja adalah sekitar lebih dari 1550⁰C sedangkan untuk besi yaitu 1300-1400⁰C. Sedangkan jika dilakukan pemotongan dengan menggunakan gerinda pada baja akan dihasilkan bunga api yang sedikit jika dibandingkan dengan besi.
